Some
DSL providers require the user to logon every time a connection is established,
and assign an IP address (which is the essential address form on the
internet) based on the validity of this logon. This means that changing
your network card, adding a router or getting a new computer simply
require re-setting the username and password, either in your router
or connection manager software. Others (like Telus Velocity) require
you to register the hardware address (MAC address) of your network card
(this is done only once, when you first register with the ISP), and
will only provide an IP address to the same hardware device that was
initially registered with them. This creates problems if you add a router
to your system, change your network card or get a new computer. With
Telus, a change in your networking hardware requires re-registration
of the new MAC address of your hardware, as network cards and many routers
will not allow the MAC address to be changed.
